LAS VEGAS (SR) - Nevada authorities seized records, computers, crack pipes, and Obama campaign literature from the Las Vegas office of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, also called ACORN. This organization tries to get low-income people to vote.
Bob Walsh, spokesman for the Nevada secretary of state's offices said the raid was prompted by ongoing complaints about "erroneous" registration information being submitted by ACORN. "They submitted over a thousand registrations alone for some guy named "Hairy Read," said Walsh.
The raid is the latest of at least nine investigations into possible fraudulent voter registration forms submitted by ACORN -- the probes have involved ACORN workers in Wisconsin, New Mexico, Indiana and other states.
Bertha Lewis, interim chief organizer for ACORN, released a statement saying the group has for months been turning over any suspicious registration information to elections officials. "We turn over all Republican registrations because everyone knows poor people don't vote Republican. We are very careful not to accept registrations we know are false." said Lewis.
