WASHINGTON (SR) - A lawyer for Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. acknowledged that Jackson is "Senate Candidate 5" in the 76-page federal complaint filed against Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was arrested Tuesday.
The son of race-baiting shakedown artist Jesse Jackson said Wednesday he sought appointment to Barack Obama's Senate seat but denied offering favors in return to Blagojevich and said he was not involved "whatsoever in hardly any wrongdoing."
Released FBI transcripts record Blagojevich discussing Candidate 5: "We were approached 'pay to play,' that, you know, he'd raise me 500 grand. An emissary came. Then the other guy would raise a million, if I made him a senator."
When questioned about the recorded comments, Jackson's attorney attempted to dismiss them, saying, "It is preposterous to think my client, the son of the esteemed Reverend Jesse Jackson, could possibly do anything improp...," before breaking into hysterical laughter. "I'm sorry, I thought I could do this but I can't - his dad's Jesse Jackson for God's sake, he was BORN guilty."
At that point the lawyer was laughing so hard he couldn't go on. He excused himself and left the room, ending the press conference.
